The Real Cost of Travel in 2026: Daily Budgets Compared Across 97 Countries

What does a day of travel actually cost in 2026? We pulled the daily budget data from our own country guides — the Budget Breakdown section we maintain and refresh in every guide — and compared backpacker, mid-range, and luxury daily costs across 97 countries on six continents. The result is one of the widest same-methodology travel cost comparisons available anywhere: the same three-tier framework, the same categories (bed, food, transport, one activity), applied from Moldova to Monaco.

Three headline numbers before we get into the tables:

  • The cheapest budget tier in the dataset is India at $20–40 a day. The most expensive is Bhutan at $250–300 a day — and they share a border. Crossing from the Indian state of West Bengal into Bhutan multiplies the minimum daily cost of travel by roughly 12x, the largest single-border price jump in the study.
  • In Moldova, Nicaragua, and Kyrgyzstan, the luxury tier starts at $150–180 a day — less than the backpacker tier in Switzerland ($130–180), Iceland ($120–180), or the Bahamas ($130–200).
  • The biggest gap between budget and luxury travel isn’t in Europe — it’s on safari. In Tanzania, luxury costs 19x the budget tier ($1,400+ vs. roughly $72 a day). Kenya (12x) and Botswana (11.5x) follow. Nowhere else on Earth does the same country contain two such different trips.

Methodology

Source: the standardized Budget Breakdown in FFU’s own 97 country guides — a budget/backpacker tier, a mid-range tier, and a luxury tier, each a daily per-person cost in USD covering accommodation, food, local transport, and one activity per day. Guides are refreshed on a rolling weekly schedule, so figures reflect 2025–2026 prices; data was extracted in August 2026. We took the three tiers from 97 of our 197 country guides, chosen to cover every region and the full price spectrum, and computed the midpoint of each range. A handful of guides quote euros or local currency; we converted at current rates and flagged them in the dataset. Where a guide’s at-a-glance summary and its detailed breakdown differed slightly, we used the detailed breakdown table. The 10 Cheapest Countries to Travel in 2026

Ranked by the midpoint of the budget (backpacker) tier, per person per day.

# Country Budget/day Mid-range/day Luxury from
1 India $20–40 $80–150 $300+
2 Nicaragua $25–35 $60–90 $150+
3 Vietnam $25–40 $60–120 $250+
4 Kyrgyzstan $25–40 $50–90 $160+
5 Cambodia $25–40 $60–120 $300+
6 Sri Lanka $25–40 $80–160 $500+
7 Uzbekistan $25–45 $55–110 $250+
8 Bangladesh $25–45 $60–120 $200+
9 Pakistan $25–45 $80–140 $300+
10 Laos $25–50 $75–175 $300+

Eight of the ten are in Asia — but the two outliers matter. Nicaragua is the cheapest country in the Americas in our data, and Kyrgyzstan (with Uzbekistan) confirms Central Asia as the last great value region: $10–20 yurt stays including meals.

The 10 Most Expensive Countries to Travel in 2026

Ranked by the same budget-tier midpoint — what the cheapest possible day costs.

# Country Budget/day Mid-range/day Luxury from
1 Bhutan $250–300 $400–550 $900+
2 Bahamas $130–200 $200–350 $500+
3 Papua New Guinea $120–200 $250–450 $600+
4 Switzerland $130–180 $260–400 $700+
5 Iceland $120–180 $250–400 $700+
6 Norway $115–180 $235–380 $600+
7 Botswana $80–180 $400–900 $1,500+
8 Monaco $90–160 $250–450 $800+
9 Saudi Arabia $90–160 $250–500 $900+
10 Seychelles $90–160 $300–550 $1,200+

Note who’s not number one. Switzerland, Norway, and Iceland are the usual “most expensive” headlines, but Bhutan’s Sustainable Development Fee makes $250–300 the mandatory floor for every visitor — higher than the luxury starting price in a third of the countries we studied. And Monaco’s budget tier only works because our guide’s honest advice is to sleep in Nice and day-trip in.

Average Daily Cost by Region

Region Countries Avg budget/day Avg mid-range/day Avg luxury from
Asia 22 $56 $160 $402
Americas 19 $67 $161 $391
Africa 17 $74 $263 $675
Middle East 9 $81 $208 $489
Europe 26 $88 $203 $441
Oceania 4 $104 $269 $579

The surprise is Africa. It’s cheaper than Europe for backpackers ($74 vs. $88 a day) but has the most expensive mid-range tier of any region except Oceania — $263 a day on average, driven almost entirely by safari logistics in Kenya, Tanzania, and Botswana. Africa is not one price point; it’s two continents sharing a coastline — Egypt and Morocco at Southeast Asian prices, safari country at Swiss-and-above prices.

Best-Value Picks: Where “Luxury” Costs Less Than Mid-Range Elsewhere

In eleven of the 97 countries, the luxury tier starts at or below $250 a day — less than a mid-range day in Switzerland, Kenya, or the USA:

Five Findings Worth Repeating

  1. Crossing the India–Bhutan border multiplies your minimum daily cost by 12x — the biggest single-border price jump on Earth ($20–40 vs. a $250–300 mandatory floor).
  2. A luxury day in Moldova ($180) costs less than a hostel-and-bakery day in Switzerland ($130–180). The same is true of Nicaragua vs. the Bahamas — two Caribbean-basin neighbors, three-times-apart price tags.
  3. Tanzania has the world’s widest travel price spread: luxury is 19x the budget tier. Safari economics, not European capitals, produce travel’s biggest budget gaps (Kenya 12x, Botswana 11.5x, Maldives 13x, Sri Lanka 15x).
  4. Central America’s oddest couple: a mid-range day in Costa Rica ($140–190) costs about twice one in neighboring Nicaragua ($60–90) — the largest cost cliff between two land neighbors in the Americas.
  5. Bulgaria is the cheapest EU member in the study ($38–65 budget days), and Albania, Georgia, and Moldova make Eastern Europe competitive with Southeast Asia — a mid-range day in Georgia ($60–110) now undercuts one in Thailand ($100–200).
